Sahar's Runway to the Cure Fundraiser

Thank you for taking the time to be here! As you may know, I was diagnosed in May of 2022 after a routine annual physical. I was 40 years old, never had a mammogram, Nora had just turned 1, and we had recently finished breastfeeding.

My journey included a single mastectomy, a round of egg retrieval, 4 rounds of chemo and I am now in medical menopause. My doctors were confident the cancer was completely removed with the mastectomy, a biopsy of my lymph nodes showed clear. This was a major win. The biopsy of my tumor showed a much higher risk of recurrence than my medical team anticipated. And I made the toughest decision of my life, to proactively put my body through chemo should there ever be a chance of this particular cancer recurring. My 2.9cm tumor was hormone sensitive - in the world of cancer a good thing. In theory, by starving my body of estrogen (inducing medical menopause via monthly injections and a daily pill), I may be able to starve any of the cancer should it be somewhere in my body. This is the recommended 5-year treatment plan for now.

Today I'm 1 year cancer free! I've been held up & surrounded by each of you both near and far, as well as the survivors I've been connected with along the way. I'm hoping to raise money in honor of those survivor friends I've met.

Reston Runway to the Cure (www.runwaytothecure.org) with sponsors Scout & Molly’s Boutique, Hyatt Regency Reston and Boston Properties, dedicates the proceeds from its runway show to both 1) a national organization conducting research to end breast cancer and 2) grants to 501(c)(3) community-based breast cancer non-profit organizations in the DC Metro Area that provide support services to breast cancer warriors. This year our fundraising will benefit METAvivor (www.metavivor.org) and IIIBs Foundation (www.keepthecandleglowing.org).

This event brings together merchants, corporations and families from our community who share the common goals of finding a cure for breast cancer & supporting those who are fighting their personal battles. Local retailers provide the outfits, jewelry and accessories that the models wear in the show, while others donate hair styling & makeup. All of the models participating are former or current breast cancer warriors, and I am proud to walk in this year's show!
